Spectacular Watergate Bay and the tranquil Japanese Gardens

A day of contrasts! The excitement and adrenaline of the extreme sports happening at Watergate Bay, followed by the tranquility of St Mawgan and the Japanese Gardens.

Watergate Bay is just under 30 minutes drive from The Olde House and one of the most spectacular beaches in Cornwall. Backed by high cliffs, there are 2 miles of golden sand at low tide. There is plenty to do here apart from simply watching the surfers & kite surfers. You can hire boards & take a surf lesson; learn to SUP (stand up paddle board); walk the length of the beach and go rock pooling at the southern end of the beach (Whipsiderry); have lunch in several places close to the beach or just find a quiet spot & relax.

After a few hours at Watergate head inland to the beautiful village of St Mawgan and the Japanese Gardens (less than 10 minutes by car). Open from early March to mid-November The Japanese Garden provides an authentic Japanese garden design in an idyllic Cornish setting. Built as a meditative garden it is the perfect space where you can relax & let go of unwanted stress wandering through the beautiful and tranquil garden.

Once you have finished relaxing in the gardens, you can take a short walk up the hill and visit the Lanherne Camelite Convent which has been the home of an enclosed community of Franciscan Sisters since 1794. You can go inside the chapel and if you’re lucky hear the sisters at prayer or singing.
